In Loving Memory of Those That Brought Us Joy

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who have been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; his eager body begins to quiver. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Leo
Died April 2003

This mastiff, “Leo Mac Shaun”, was taken into Rescue on April 23, 2003. The owner wanted to give him up because Leo had been “bloated” for the past six months, and he could not afford the expense of veterinary care. There were no veterinary records supplied for any examination or treatment for this complaint. The owner surrendered Leo to Rescue at a veterinary clinic. At first glance, it was obvious that he was very ill. He was extremely emaciated, and his abdomen was enormously distended with fluid. Leo was alert and friendly, but was so weak that he could barely stand. Leo was examined immediately by a veterinarian, who observed that the dog had an elevated and irregular heartbeat, difficulty breathing, deficient pulses in his rear legs, and fluid not only in the abdomen, but (based on muffled heart and lung sounds) probably in the chest cavity as well. Possible diagnoses included advanced congestive heart failure, liver disease, and/or advanced cancer. The vet believed that Leo was terminal and in significant discomfort, and recommended immediate euthanasia, which was carried out. Leo weighed 150 lbs. that day. After euthanasia, his abdomen was drained. It contained 50 lbs. of fluid. We hope that putting Leo’s story on this site will encourage owners who find themselves in difficult situations with regard to their mastiff to seek help from Rescue early, before the dog suffers.
